Overstacked

A Fast-Paced Surf Themed Stacking Game for Everyone to Enjoy!

Over Stacked is a fast-paced, surf-themed stacking game developed in collaboration with Big Potato Games, a leading name in innovative and sustainable party games. The brief challenged us to create a game that was quick to learn, socially engaging, and environmentally conscious, hallmarks of Big Potato’s brand ethos.

The concept draws inspiration from the classic image of surfboards stacked high on the roof of a vintage van. In the game, two teams compete to stack surfboards and beach items onto a wobbly roof rack, while using sabotage cards to destabilise their opponents. Precision, balance, and mischievous tactics are at the heart of the gameplay. The tension builds with each round until the inevitable collapse—crowning the more strategic (or lucky) team the winner.

I led the full design process, from initial ideation and mechanics testing through to prototyping, branding, packaging, and CAD modelling. Iterative testing drove meaningful improvements, such as integrating spring-loaded instability mechanics, developing diverse board shapes and weights, and designing interactive sabotage cards to reduce player downtime and amplify excitement.

Sustainability was central to the project. The surfboards and components were designed to be injection-moulded using recycled marine plastics, while the game board (a traditional VW Caddy) was prototyped by 3D printing the car. Packaging used FSC-certified unlined greyboard, and the entire game aligned with Big Potato’s B-Corp values.

Over Stacked exemplifies a playful yet strategic family game, combining nostalgic aesthetics with tactile gameplay and circular design thinking. It stands as a showcase of how sustainable, joyful design can emerge from collaborative industry partnerships.

Make it stand out.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
