Hydroponics System

As part of a collaborative group project with Dyson and the University of Sussex, we were challenged to explore design interventions that could improve housing, workspaces, and mental well-being, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and human-centred design. The project began with in-depth research into the relationship between green spaces and mental health, particularly in urban environments where access to nature is often limited. We studied how even minimal contact with natural elements, especially within office settings, can measurably improve mood, reduce stress, and support cognitive performance.

Through interviews, user observations, and environmental psychology frameworks, we identified a core opportunity: to reintroduce nature into interior spaces in a way that is accessible, engaging, and sustainable. Our solution was the development of an indoor hydroponic system specifically designed for modern living and working environments. More than just a functional planter, this self-contained unit was envisioned as a wellness tool, a living object that invites users into a gentle, daily interaction with nature.

The system integrates hydroponic growing technology with a minimal, modular form factor, allowing it to fit comfortably into both professional and domestic spaces. Its intuitive design encourages routine care of the plants, offering psychological benefits akin to mindfulness practices. By fostering this interaction, the system supports mental health, productivity, and emotional resilience, while also providing a tangible connection to sustainability.

This project was recognized with the University of Sussex Dyson Award, selected for its innovative approach to well-being, and for aligning with Dyson’s values of intelligent, purposeful design. The collaboration with Dyson provided invaluable feedback and insight throughout the development process, ensuring the final concept balanced technological practicality with human experience. The project not only demonstrates the power of design to shape healthier living and working environments but also exemplifies a future-facing approach to sustainability through well-being.
