Schofield Watch Box
As part of a group project, we collaborated with Schofield Watch Company. A distinguished independent brand based in West Sussex. The brief was to design a new watch box that aligns with the style and narrative of their unreleased model, the B6, which draws heavy inspiration from the British coastline. The objective was to create a packaging solution that not only reflected the rugged, poetic nature of the coast but also remained authentic to Schofield’s distinct design language.
Drawing inspiration from the form of a mermaid’s purse, a mysterious and organic object frequently found along the shoreline, we developed a concept that subtly channels the coastal environment. Throughout the project, we maintained close communication with Schofield, incorporating their feedback and brand ethos into a series of refined prototypes. The final outcome was an elegant and functional watch box that echoes the spirit of the sea, enhancing the unboxing experience while remaining true to the character of the B6.
Research
Research began with an in-person visit to the shop and an interview with Giles, the owner, which provided valuable first-hand insights into the space, its users, and daily challenges. These findings, combined with targeted secondary research, informed a collaborative brainstorming session where we generated and refined a range of concepts to carry forward into the ideation phase.
Draw
Prototype
Once we had agreed on a concept and narrative that aligned with the brief and our research, we moved into an iterative prototyping phase. Each prototype built on the insights of the last, allowing us to refine the design step by step. Key developments included evolving the form from rounded to sharper edges for a more defined aesthetic, introducing a raised platform within the watch compartment to present the watch as it opens, and incorporating a rope-style lashing system to securely hold it in place. These refinements elevated both the functionality and the tactile experience of the design.
Finalise
The final design resulted in a sleek, mechanically operated slide-opening watch box that locked using two gold front knobs. Subtle green and red accents on the knobs referenced starboard and port, adding a thoughtful nautical touch that tied seamlessly into the brand’s coastal ethos.
