Matcha Maker

In this project, I explored how physical interaction can elevate the ritual of tea consumption, centred on Bird & Blend Tea Co. and their unique approach to customer experience. The focus was on deepening engagement through the sensory and ceremonial aspects of tea preparation, with particular attention to the craft of matcha making. By examining both traditional Japanese tea practices and contemporary user needs, I developed a concept that blends heritage with innovation.

The outcome was a carefully considered, two-part matcha maker designed for both home and café settings. Featuring an oscillating whisk for authentic mixing, temperature control, and an ergonomic, user-friendly design, the device reflects Bird & Blend’s values of quality, sustainability, and community. This project was developed in direct collaboration with Bird & Blend, whose insights and feedback shaped the design at every stage.

As a result of this work, I was selected by Bird & Blend for a project prize, recognising the design’s alignment with their brand ethos. The project was also chosen to represent the University of Sussex at New Designers 2024, showcasing how thoughtful design can reimagine everyday rituals and bring traditional practices into a contemporary context.
